It’s hard to believe that we’re still rocking guacamole 700 years after it was first created by the Aztecs. According to the website Avocados from Mexico, the Aztecs believed this tasty mashup of avocado, tomato, and chili peppers gave them strength. It’s hard to disagree with that logic. Not only is guacamole packed with healthy fats, but all the things you add into it, such as garlic, onion, cilantro, and lime—are fantastic for your body, giving you the strength to lift that heavy margarita to your lips. But wait, may we suggest wine? Let’s explore which wines to pair with guacamole.

Pairing the right wine with guacamole can make a big difference in how you experience the flavors in your favorite recipe. We scooped up three of our favorite guacamole recipes and paired them with wine, all based on Traveling Vineyard Sommology.

Authentic Guacamole

From Avocados from Mexico

This recipe calls for lime juice, cilantro, salt, a Roma tomato, and jalapeño. The dominant flavors will be salty with a heat element. We typically pair a white wine that leans ever-so-slightly to the sweet side, like our Lazy Lab Riesling. A bite of spicy guac on a salty chip followed by a sip of a semi-sweet Riesling will balance the heat and bring out the other flavors in this recipe.

Greek Guacamole

From Food Network | Ree Drummond

Can’t get enough Mediterranean cuisine? Just add avocado and turn your Greek chopped salad—complete with kalamata olives, feta, red pepper, lemon, and red onion—into Greek Guac. Serve with sliced cucumber and let the flavors in the dip do their job (no salty chip required!). This guac is healthy, bursting with flavor, and made for a crisp white with a zip, like our Lulo Grüner Veltliner. The fresh, bright fruitiness of this white wine will bring a nice balance on the palate.

Pomegranate Guacamole

From Two Peas and Their Pod

It’s summer lovin’ season and everyday apps like guacamole get a glow up with easy additions, like pomegranate arils. This recipe takes the authentic version of guac and folds in gorgeous tart-sweet pomegranate. You didn’t think any more super foods could get squeezed into guacamole, but prepare to be wowed. This simple ingredient shifts the wine pairing only slightly. The jalapeño and salt still make it a great fit for a semi-sweet, but we’d also suggest trying a dry Rosé like our 2020 Pearls & Kicks Rosé, a crisp pink drink sporting juicy fruit flavors of wild berry, watermelon, and citrus.
